I met spoko on Monday, July 24th at the Nebraska State Board of Health Meeting in Lincoln. We were both there to support the legalization of allowing midwives to attend homebirths. Mostly women attended, he was one of our very few male representatives that shows this is not a single-gender issue as one might expect.

Seems like a great mom!

She asks genuine questions, and seems honestly to be open to the responses. Which is just one way of saying that she’s real—all too rare a quality, I think.

We also like some of the same books and movies, and I’d love to discuss those some time.

He seems so normal and well adjusted. Normal people are facinating to me but that’s a whole other story.

Anyway, I’d like to hear more on his thoughts about Walmart, his creative writing degree, homeschooling and homebirth.

Funny story I don’t know why but for the first couple of weeks I thought Spoko was a lady. I pictured a midwestern housewife in her early forties. Then I read an entry about his wife giving birth and was like, “Oh!”.

She says that if we were in the same city we’d be friends. True enough, I think. But then you never know—I have friends from all over, and how far apart are we really? Central Nebraska, central California, what’s that, 1500 miles, tops? Piece of cake, baby. :)

Have only just discovered spoko on 43things, but i’d like to meet him beause (1) he’s close enough geographically where this might actually happen. And (2) we share some of the same quirky and radical interests. And (3) i admire his commitment to natural childbrith, and to fatherhood.

Don’t think i’d get to meet somebody like him everyday, especially in Nebraska.
